Transplant Immunology is the roles of immune system in the transplantation process as immune system poses an important role in significant organ transplantation when the tissues or organs are transplanted from one person to another.
In order to reduce the risk of transplant rejection, the recipient is treated with immunosuppressive drugs to suppress the immune response. These immunosuppressive drugs are given in 2 phases initial phase with higher dosage and maintenance phase with lower dose for longer period of time. These immunosuppressive drugs are non-specific and leave the recipient more susceptible to diseases and side effects.
The donor and recipient are matched prior to decrease the risk of rejection. They are matched based on blood group, tissue typing and reaction of the recipient to the donor’s serum.
